Tiny Sprouts Wave Rider kids sports t-shirt and shorts - what kids should wear for sports day and PE in India

What Should Kids Wear for Sports Day and PE Class in India?

Sports day is the one school event where the wrong outfit is genuinely a problem. A heavy cotton tee that soaks through in the first race, shorts that need constant hitching, shoes chosen an hour before leaving – all of it shows up in how your child actually plays. Here's a practical kit list for Indian conditions.

Start with what the school asks for

Most Indian schools specify a house colour, white shoes, and either the official PE uniform or plain sportswear. Check the circular before buying anything – a set that breaks the dress code is worse than an imperfect one that doesn't.

Where schools leave it open, you're choosing on three things: fabric, fit and layers.

The fabric question

This is where most sports day outfits go wrong. Cotton is wonderful for a classroom and poor for a 200-metre sprint in 34°C – it absorbs sweat and holds it, so the tee gets heavy, clings and stays damp for the rest of the morning.

Poly mesh does the opposite: it wicks moisture to the surface where it evaporates, so the garment stays light and dries in minutes. For the two or three hours of an actual sports day, that's the difference between comfortable and miserable.

Activity Best fabric
Sports day, athletics, PE class 170–180 GSM poly mesh
Yoga, indoor games, drill practice Either – cotton is fine
Post-event, going home Dry cotton change of clothes

A sports day kit that actually works

  • Sports tee and shorts – quick-drying, close but not tight, shoulder seams sitting at the shoulder edge
  • A full change of clothes – the single most useful thing in the bag
  • Cotton socks and broken-in shoes – never new shoes on the day; blisters end participation faster than anything
  • Water bottle – filled and frozen halfway the night before if it's a hot month
  • Cap and sunscreen – most events run through the mid-morning sun
  • A small towel – for between events

Fit rules for running

Sportswear should be close enough not to billow and loose enough to pinch a little fabric at the sides. Sleeves that hang past the elbow catch on things. Shorts should sit at the waist with a drawstring your child can adjust without help – nothing derails a race like a hand holding up a waistband.

If your child is between sizes, size up on the set and tighten the drawstring. Check our kids sports set size guide for the full chart.

Season notes

Summer events: lighter fabric, a cap, and a bottle that stays cold. Avoid dark colours if the dress code allows.

Monsoon and post-monsoon: quick-drying matters even more – poly mesh dries after a downpour, cotton doesn't. Pack an extra set.

Winter mornings: layer with a sweatshirt that comes off before the event, not during it. Browse kids sweatshirts.

What we make for it

We manufacture our kids AOP sports sets for exactly this: a matching tee and shorts in 170 GSM poly mesh with Dri-FIT technology, an inner drawstring cord and slip-on pockets, unisex in sizes 4 to 13 years. The all-over prints are sublimated into the fabric, so they don't crack or fade through a season of washing.

FAQs

Is polyester too hot for Indian summers?

Lightweight poly mesh is cooler than damp cotton during activity, because it moves sweat away instead of holding it. For sitting in a classroom all day, cotton is still the better choice.

What size should I buy for a growing child?

Size up and use the drawstring. Kids grow about one size a year, and activewear that's slightly roomy is far more comfortable than activewear that's slightly tight.

How do I wash sportswear so it lasts?

Cold water, mild detergent, no fabric softener – softener coats the fibres and blocks the moisture-wicking. Line dry in shade.

Can the same set be worn for everyday play?

Yes, for outdoor play and park sessions. For sleep and all-day wear, switch to breathable cotton – more on that in cotton vs polyester for kids.
